Are You Kidding Me? Grocery Stores on Thanksgiving?
So, it's Thanksgiving 2025, and we're still doing this? Still scrambling for that forgotten can of cranberry sauce or, god forbid, a last-minute turkey? The fact that we even have to ask "what stores are open on Thanksgiving" is a monument to our collective insanity.
Like, seriously, can't we just give it a rest for ONE DAY?
The Almighty Dollar Wins Again
Bravo Supermarkets, Fresh Market, Sprouts Farmers Market, Whole Foods… they're all throwing their doors open, albeit with "limited hours." Translation: they're willing to sacrifice a little bit of family time for a whole lot of profit. And offcourse, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Family Dollar are in on it too, because what screams "Thanksgiving" like bargain-basement consumerism? Don't even get me started on Walgreens and CVS. I saw one article say "some CVS stores may be open on Thanksgiving Day." May be? MAY BE?! It's like they're dangling the possibility of cold medicine and questionable snacks in front of us like some kind of twisted holiday carrot.
Kroger is even jumping in. But closing early at 5pm, according to the company’s website. Give me a break.
And Krispy Kreme? Open 'til 2pm? What is this, a sugar-fueled Black Friday warmup?
I get it, capitalism, supply and demand, blah blah blah. But there's a line, people. A line between providing a service and exploiting a societal addiction to instant gratification. Thanksgiving should be about gratitude, family, and maybe a tryptophan-induced nap, not fighting over the last pumpkin pie at Whole Foods.
The Casualties of Convenience
Then you've got the stores that are actually doing the right thing. ALDI, BJ's, Costco, Publix, Sam's Club, Target, Trader Joe's, Walmart, Winn-Dixie—closed. Heroes, all of them! (Okay, maybe "heroes" is a bit much. But still, props for prioritizing employees' sanity.)
But let's be real, it's not like these corporations are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They probably crunched the numbers and realized the PR hit of being open on Thanksgiving just wasn't worth the marginal profit. Or maybe they're just betting that people will do all their shopping the day before. Who knows?
I wonder how many employees at these open stores are actually "thankful" to be there? Probably about as many as are "happy" to work on Black Friday. Which is to say, zero.
It's like we're all trapped in some kind of consumerist Groundhog Day, destined to repeat this same ridiculous charade year after year. When will we finally say enough is enough? When will we reclaim Thanksgiving as a day of rest, reflection, and, dare I say, actual gratitude?
So, What's the Real Story?
It's not about the cranberries, it's about the principle. It's about resisting the urge to turn every single day into a shopping opportunity. It's about valuing human connection over corporate profits. And frankly, the fact that I even have to write this in 2025 is just depressing.
